I find the best method to be preheating the mold to roughly 650 degrees Fahrenheit before casting. It helps the steel to flow better.

is right. I also use a special flux to remove any remaining oxidization from the bore brush before casting.

That's helpful, guys. But how can you tell the right temperature? I mean, I don't want to cause any distortion.

You're right,. Too high can do harm. You can use an infrared thermometer to closely monitor your mold's temperature during heat up. -
